This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Environmental Engineer to work out of our Portland, ME office. WSP environmental engineers enjoy completing a wide range of environmental assessment, inspection and remediation projects. Selected applicant will take part in providing local technical assistance for investigations of soil, air, and groundwater and protection and mitigation efforts relating to water supply, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, and pollution control. Selected applicant will generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact

  • Under general supervision, collect and compile environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, sludge, and other matrices for engineering analysis.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
  • Perform engineering calculations, cost estimates, data validation, and report preparation.
  • Assist with performing basic professional environmental engineering work relating to air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial and agricultural facilities, pollution sources, existing site conditions, water resource, and underground storage tanks.
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing entry-level technical assistance on various environmental issues.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, statistical documentation, and logbooks.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products.
  • Familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • This role is full-time onsite.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
